English as a Tool for Social Integration

English as a Tool for Social Integration

The discovery and development of language by early man are considered as one of the most important advancements in early human development. The world enjoys a diversity of many communities whom in turn have their versions of languages to facilitate communication between individuals. For instance, India has more than 700 languages spoken by the local people. To promote effective communication among these different language groups, the supreme law of the land in India recognizes both English and Hindi as the official languages. English promotes communication within and beyond borders of a particular country because the language is considered as universal and thus promoting social integration globally. Social integration can be defined as the process through which different groups come together to form one cohesive society. The English language was first used in the 5th century when the Anglo-Saxons imported it into Britain. Can you imagine a world without a universal language where people can communicate and reach each other? The world would be filled with confusion, and international integration will be more of a dream. However, the English language has turned the World into one global community since individuals can effectively communicate with each other. The communications can serve various roles whether it is for business or sporting.Let’s look at a sporting event such as The Olympics that brings together different countries with different mother tongues where English is used as a tool of communication since every participant can comprehend the basics of the language. With this, social integration is fostered amongst the participating countries. Having the necessary skills to communicate in English has promoted social integration in various ways also; for instance, the UK receives various immigrants who seek asylum in search for political and economic stability absent in their mother countries. The immigrants who can communicate in English are easily assimilated in the UK culture as compared to those who do not know how to speak English. It is suggested that 69% of the population of Great Britain believes speaking in the English language to be the most important factor in the integration of migrants into the British society. To measure how important it is for immigrants to learn and be able to communicate in English, both adults in the political divide in Great Britain supported the government initiative to cut benefits for individuals unable to speak English and are not enrolled in any English lessons offered in the country. The government of UK promotes such proposals since it knows it is only having a common language in the country that social integration between the indigenous Britons and immigrants can be achieved. The international community views English as a tool of social integration because the language is taught across the world either as a first or a second language from early childhood. This is because English is considered to be easy to learn as compared to other languages such as French, German, Spanish and Chinese which are also gaining ground in the international community. Also, most of the worldwide communication sources and information are commonly found in English. These sources include websites, films, documentaries and TV shows. Therefore, English is not only a medium of communication but also a tool that facilitates social integration in the international community.
